The sound is darker and more experimental than Garage with less emphasis on vocals and incorporates elements of Breakbeat and Drum and Bass into 2-step. Tracks frequently use a minor key, rhythms are usually syncopated, and the tempo is nearly always in the range of 138–142 BPM.
